User Authentication Recommendations

 

I.                  Passwords will need to be a minimum of 8 characters

II.                Passwords will expire every 90 days for teachers and students, all other district employees every 60 days.

 III.                          You will not be allowed to use the previous five passwords

 IV.            Passwords must be complex

A.   Passwords cannot contain the user's account name or parts of the user's full name that exceed two consecutive characters

B.   Passwords must be at least eight characters in length

C.   Passwords must contain characters from at least three of the following four categories:

a)     English uppercase alphabet characters (A–Z)

b)    English lowercase alphabet characters (a–z)

c)     Numbers (0–9)

d)    Non-alphanumeric characters (for example: !$#,%)

 V.                  After the fifth unsuccessful logon the user will be locked out of their system. Wait 5 minutes and try to log in again. If this does not work you will need to contact the Technology Department at extension 1501.

 

VI.            Time out for inactive use by Walton County School District Teachers is set at 60 minutes - this allows time for teachers to complete a lesson with Power Point or ActivBoard.  All other staff members will be set to 30 minutes.

Unacceptable Practices for Passwords

·        To post Passwords/User ID’s on your keyboard

·        To post Passwords/User ID’s on your desk

·        To post Passwords/User ID’s inside a drawer/door

·        To use the same password more than once a year

·        To e-mail or give your password to anyone.  If the district needs this information you will be contacted by phone or in person by district personnel.

 

****NOTE: Computers should be shut down at the end of the last class of the day.
